AKD advises Samskip on joint venture with Matrans Rotterdam Terminal

July 4, 2024

A multi-departmental AKD team is advising Samskip on its new partnership with Matrans Rotterdam Terminal, realising a state-of-the-art green terminal in Rotterdam and revolutionising green logistics. The terminal will serve as a central hub for Samskip and Matrans operations, streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency.

Samskip, a leading multimodal and logistics company, offers pan-European, more sustainable multimodal transport services via shortsea, road, rail and inland waterway routes. High frequency services connect destinations across Europe, Iceland and Faroes Island, both door-to-door and quay-to-quay, using a wide range of vessels, containers, trucks and trailers.
Together with Matrans Rotterdam Terminal, they will launch a new terminal and future hub in Rotterdam.

The new hub will focus on sustainable solutions to drive multimodal transport, combined with electrification of vehicles, shore power and solar power, contributing to reduced environmental impact. The terminal will contribute to faster and more reliable transit times for containerised and breakbulk transport. This will include the lowest possible CO2 footprint, aligning with both Samskip’s and Matrans’ commitment to sustainability.

Subject to obtaining clearance from the Dutch Competition Authority (ACM), Festing HF, the real estate holding company affiliated to Samskip that primarily owns ports and warehouses, will acquire 50% of the shares of the Matrans Rotterdam Terminal from the current shareholder.

The AKD deal team is led by Carlos Pita Cao and David Molenaar, and further consists of Joost Houdijk, Marjolein Snoek, Karst Vriesendorp (Competition/EU Law), Erik Dans (Environment & Planning), Floris van Westrhenen and Nino van Deinsen (Real Estate), Ludo Luijks and Maud Plattel (Tax), Jochem Timmermans, Tycho Heijnsbroek, Ruben Dickhoff (Corporate M&A), Jos van der Meché, Annemieke Spijker, Jorian Gunst, Bart van der Sluijs (Transport & Trade), Mariëlle van Winden, Mark Putting, and Arie van der Meij (Employment), Niels Hagelstein, and Dominic Guljé (Banking & Finance), and Remco Bosveld and Daan ter Wee (Notarial services).
